Lariat Painting No. 1 (or Also Makes a Nice Tablecloth), 2016, water-based paint, drop cloth, horse dung.
"You have to invent your own tools and your own procedures." - Richard Serra
A native Texan, I spent a lot of my childhood entertaining myself on my grandparents' modest five acres where their quarter horses roamed and I inherited their fondness for western style. I did not study painting formally, but I used to say I'd like to be a painter if I wasn't making performances. For the longest time I had an urge to use a lariat as a paintbrush, then finally the opportunity arose to test my idea at a farm in Australia. "Lariat Painting No. 1" is pure experimentation and my initiation into another form for me to 'wrangle'.
