Waiting for the Rain by Kevin Cummines and Clara Luthas

This is one of five mini-operas that I directed and designed, which were written by NYU Tisch Graduate Musical Theatre Writing alumni. The operas were inspired by Judy Chicago’s installation, The Dinner Party, and co-produced by American Opera Projects, NYU Tisch, and the Brooklyn Museum. They premiered on May 27, 2018 in the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium at the Brooklyn Museum

Waiting For the Rain [inspired by Hildigard von Bingen]
Music by Kevin Cummines Libretto by Clara Luthas

Hildegard - Nicole Mitchell
God/Papa/Bishop - Keith Browning
God/Young Hildegard/Jutta - Amelia Watkins

Eighteen-year-old Hildegard von Bingen, medieval nun committed to the church to live in solitude as a child, has had another vision. But this one changes everything, for God has called her to speak out and challenge the Catholic Church. This sends Hildegard into a whirl-wind of confusion as her understanding of God, The Church, and where she stands in the fray, is shaken to her core.
